Background
The Federal No Child Left Behind Act requires
that state education agencies provide technical assistance to low performing
school districts and buildings. The Ohio Revised Code requires that
the "Ohio
Department of Education establish a system of intensive ongoing support
for improvement of districts and buildings." It further requires
that the
"system shall give priority to districts and buildings that have been
declared to be under an academic watch or in a state of academic emergency
under section 3302.03 of the Revised Code..." Since 2002, the Ohio
Department of Education, through the
School
Improvement Support,
has made technical assistance available, in the form of coaching, to districts
that have been identified as in
District Improvement (DI) as
well as buildings identified in
School Improvement (SI).
Ohio's System for School Improvement Services
To help Ohio reach its goal, the
School
Improvement Support has introduced a statewide system of school
improvement services. The system began with the 2004-2005 school year to
align resources, information, tools, professional development and technical
assistance to improve student achievement.
What is the Northeast Regional
School Improvement Team?
The Northeast Regional School
Improvement team, a partnership of the
Ohio
Department of Education and the Educational
Service Center of Cuyahoga County,
provides a coordinated system of credentialed coaches that support districts
in District
Improvement (DI) and buildings in
School Improvement (SI) in improving student achievement, developing
leadership capacity and imbedding standards-based instruction.
The state system of Ohio has 12 regional
service areas that are guided by a Core School Improvement Team. The Northeast office, Region 8, services Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake
and Lorain counties. The Northeast Regional School Improvement Team (RSIT) works
collaboratively with the
Regional School
Improvement Partners and
Regional Providers
to provide a variety of services to school
districts, especially districts with buildings in school improvement status.
